The Sabbath…In Context

SabbathContextSabbath (G4521 ~ Sabbaton) is mentioned 68 times in 62 verses in the New Testament.

It is translated as Sabbath 59 times, first day of the week 8 times, and week 1 time.

Of the verses where “first day of the week” is used two of them use G4521 as “Sabbath” as well as “first day of the week” in the same verse.

Six of the eight using “first day of the week” are focused on the Messiah’s resurrection while one is during the period between Passover and Shavuot where Paul would have been counting the Sabbaths to Shavuot or Pentecost.

We also have two pertaining to tithing.

Context plays a major factor in rightly understanding these verses.

Our English Bibles have some translational errors, whether they were done with deception in mind or by accident.  Some people use these verses to build a doctrine around the idea that there was a change of the Sabbath day from Saturday to Sunday.  Unfortunately, they overlook the 59 times it was translated as Sabbath. Please read and study the context surrounding these verses as you go through them.

About the Author

Jeremy lives in North Louisiana with his wife and three children. He grew up in Methodist and Baptist churches most of his life. His pastor, who also happened to be his Uncle, started realizing that Torah was still an important part of our relationship with God and began to incorporate Torah into his messages. Jeremy set out on a mission to prove his Uncle wrong and dove head first into the Word. He failed in his quest to disprove his Uncle and came to realize that the whole Word still applies to believers today.
