Two Witnesses

heaven-and-earthThere are many thoughts on who the “Two Witnesses” mentioned in Revelation will be.  Although that is a subject that is always interesting to discuss and speculate, we are going to address two other witnesses mentioned in the scriptures, but first, let’s look at the reasoning for having or needing two witnesses.

According to YHWH, everything is either verified or established by a minimum of two witnesses.  Let’s look at a few verses where two witnesses are mentioned.

Numbers 35:30

‘Whoever kills someone has to be put to death as a murderer by the mouth of witnesses, but only one witness does not bear witness against someone to die.

Deuteronomy 17:6

“At the mouth of two or three witnesses shall he that is to die be put to death. He is not put to death by the mouth of one witness.

Deuteronomy 19:15

“One witness does not rise up against a man concerning any crookedness or any sin that he commits. At the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses a matter is established.

Paul quotes some of Deuteronomy 19:15 in one of His letters also.

II Corinthians 13:1

This is the third time I am coming to you. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”

Before any judgment can take place, YHWH established that a minimum of two witnesses would need to stand for or against someone.  This also stands true with the judgment that YHWH will declare for those who disregard His covenants or disobey His Instructions.  The two witnesses He established have been present since the foundation of His creation as we know it and will also stand for or against us on Judgment day.  These two witnesses are Heaven and Earth.  Now let’s look at a few of the reasons why we have come to this conclusion.

Deuteronomy 4:23-26

“Guard yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of YHWH your Elohim which He made with you, and shall make for yourselves a carved image in the form of whatever YHWH your Elohim has forbidden you. “For YHWH your Elohim is a consuming fire, a jealous Ěl(God). “When you bring forth children and grandchildren, and shall grow old in the land, and shall do corruptly and make a carved image in the form of whatever, and shall do what is evil in the eyes of YHWH your Elohim to provoke Him, “I shall call the HEAVENS and EARTH to witness against you on that day, that you soon completely perish from the land which you pass over the Yardĕn to possess – you do not prolong your days in it but are completely destroyed.

Deuteronomy 30:11-20

“For this command which I am commanding you today, it is not too hard for you, nor is it far off. “It is not in the heavens, to say, ‘Who shall ascend into the heavens for us, and bring it to us, and cause us to hear it, so that we do it?’ “Nor is it beyond the sea, to say, ‘Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it to us, and cause us to hear it, so that we do it?’ “For the Word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart – to do it. “See, I have set before you today life and good, and death and evil, in that I am commanding you today to love YHWH your Elohim, to walk in His ways, and to guard His commands, and His laws, and His right-rulings. And you shall live and increase, and YHWH your Elohim shall bless you in the land which you go to possess. “But if your heart turns away, and you do not obey, and shall be drawn away, and shall bow down to other mighty ones and serve them, “I have declared to you today that you shall certainly perish, you shall not prolong your days in the land which you are passing over the Yardĕn to enter and possess. “I have called the HEAVENS and the EARTH as witnesses today against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore you shall choose life, so that you live, both you and your seed, to love YHWH your Elohim, to obey His voice, and to cling to Him – for He is your life and the length of your days – to dwell in the land which YHWH swore to your fathers, to Aḇraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Ya‛aqoḇ, to give them.”

Deuteronomy 31:24-29

And it came to be, when Mosheh had completed writing the Words of this Torah in a book, until their completion, that Mosheh commanded the Lĕwites, who bore the ark of the covenant of YHWH, saying, “Take this Book of the Torah, and you shall place it beside the ark of the covenant of YHWH your Elohim, and it shall be there as a witness against you, for I myself know your rebellion and your stiff neck. See, while I am still alive with you today, you have been rebellious against YHWH, then how much more after my death? “Assemble unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, so that I speak these words in their hearing and call the HEAVENS and the EARTH to witness against them. “For I know that after my death you shall do very corruptly and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you. And evil shall come to you in the latter days, because you do what is evil in the eyes of YHWH, to provoke Him through the work of your hands.”

These two witnesses are still standing for or against us today and will be standing at our judgment just as the Father declared.  Times have changed, and people have become more and more corrupted from creation until now but just as the Father’s definition of sin has not changed neither has His Two witnesses who were called to testify of our obedience or disobedience to His instructions.

About the Author

Jeremy lives in North Louisiana with his wife and three children. He grew up in Methodist and Baptist churches most of his life. His pastor, who also happened to be his Uncle, started realizing that Torah was still an important part of our relationship with God and began to incorporate Torah into his messages. Jeremy set out on a mission to prove his Uncle wrong and dove head first into the Word. He failed in his quest to disprove his Uncle and came to realize that the whole Word still applies to believers today.

Is this why Heaven and Earth will pass away (Matt 24:35, Mark 13:31, Rev 21:1-2) –so they can no longer stand against us?

So how does both heaven and earth die in the streets of Jerusalem?

Yes, when you read the entire passage of Revelation 11:1-14, this theory seems to fall apart.

I don’t think he’s implying they are the two witnesses of revelation. He said he’s addressing two other witnesses in the good book.
